i've committed this, along with 53299 and 54144, since there were no
objections. sorry i left them so long. i updated README since it's
technically a breaking change. though the existing behaviour is
undocumented and not useful afaict so idk who'd be relying on it

(the reply i got before didn't address anything that wasn't in my
original post -- respectfully)
