I wonder if it has something to do with those trailing control-A that
supposedly work around some old yodl bug.

There are a number of places where the whitespace around the node refs
is messed up because of the ifzman()/ifnzman() constructs, but that can
be solved by adding or removing a few backslashes, I think.
