No. A mathematician would understand that this is purely a matter
of convention, even if ours is not what most people are accustomed
to (which I don't deny).

There is no universal "best practice"; conventions are entirely
dependent on context. For example, in the context of baseball
statistics, standard practice is to express the value 0.331 as
".331", and no one finds it strange or objectionable.
